Investigation of medication errors in a teaching psychiatric hospital using chart reviews

This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the frequency of medica¬tion errors (MEs) occurring in a teaching psychiatric hospital in the city of Tehran, Iran. Medication errors were defined by using widely accepted criteria. A cross-sectional prospective study using chart reviews to detect medication errors. Rates of error in prescribing, ordering, transcribing, administering and monitoring were determined. The frequency of these errors was analysed and reported using SPSS-21 software. The study was conducted on six patient care units (n=182).

Gastrocutaneous fistula secondary to long-standing retained intragastric foreign body (toothbrush) – a rare case report

Ingested foreign body present a common clinical problem. More than 80% of ingested foreign bodies which reach stomach pass uneventfully through gastrointestinal tract. The remainder may cause complications such as obstruction, perforation and haemorrhage. It is a common problem in children but also seen in adults. We present a rare case of gastric perforation due to toothbrush in 86years old male, presenting as a foreign-body-induced gastrocutaneous fistula in the form of a chronic discharging sinus and intraabdominal abscess.

Drug induced steven johnson syndrome

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare, serious disorder of skin and mucous membranes. It's usually a reaction to a medication or an infection. Often, it begins with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful red or purplish rash that spreads and blisters. Then the top layer of the affected skin dies, sheds and then heals. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a medical emergency that usually requires hospitalization. Treatment focuses on eliminating the underlying cause, controlling symptoms and minimizing complications as your skin regrows.

Outcome of indian oral cancer surgical ablation defects reconstruction by various flaps

Introduction: Lower Gingivo Buccal Sulcus (GBS) is a major sub site for oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the Indian subcontinent. The gold standard management of Lower GBS cancer is surgical ablation which creates sometimes large defects. Currently, micro vascular free tissue transfer is considered as ideal choice for oral cavity reconstruction. This prospective study describes the outcome of Indian oral cancer surgical ablation defects reconstruction by various flaps.

Delusional disorder- case study

Delusional disorder is classified as a psychotic disorder, a disorder where a person has trouble recognizing reality. A delusion is a false belief that is based on an incorrect interpretation of reality. Delusions, like all psychotic symptoms, can occur as part of many different psychiatric disorders. But the term delusional disorder is used when delusions are the most prominent symptom. A person with this illness holds a false belief firmly, despite clear evidence or proof to the contrary.

Antioxidant and lipid peroxidation protective properties of aqueous plant extracts in mononuclear blood cells under high oxidant stress

Effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) was determined to assess the antioxidant property of the aqueous extracts of Nigella sativa seeds, Allium sativum, and Rosmarinus officinalis leaves. Lipid peroxidation was measured as marker for oxidative stress. Malondialdehyde significantly increased in the presence of H2O2 indicating extensive lipid peroxidation. The preincubation of PBMNCs with Nigella sativa aqueous extract resulted in a significant reduction of lipid peroxidation in the presence of 10 mM H2O2 at a dose as low as 0.8 mg/ml.

Evaluation of anti-microbial efficacy of plant derived extract against plaque associated bacteria

Context: Dental plaque are soft deposits that adhere to the tooth surface and acts as a harbor for numerous pathogenic microorganisms. Prevention of plaque accumulation serves to eliminate the microbial colonization. The commercially available anti-plaque agents are associated with certain side effects especially with prolonged use. Hence, the utility of natural plant derived extracts may possess beneficial effects against the pathogenic bacteria.

The investigation antiproliferative and apoptotic effects of capsaicin and alpha lipoic acidon colon adenocarcinoma cells

Although many studies have focused on antitumoral properties of capsaicin and alpha lipoic acid, molecular mechanisms by which selectively effects are incompletely determined. In current study, we investigated cytotoxic and apoptotic role of natural compounds on colon adenocarcinoma cells. Capcaicin was evaluated for different concentrations at Caco-2. Cytotoxic effects of capsaicin and alpha lipoic acid on Caco-2 cells were determined by MTT. However, antioxidant activities of alpha lipoic acid were evaluated when used with capsaicin or separately groups.

Comparing the effectiveness of aripiprazol vs risperidone adjunctive to lithium in patients with acute mania with psychotic features. a double-blind randomized clinical trial

Introduction: Research suggests that both aripiprazole and risperidone are effective in treating acute mania in combination with mood stabilizers. The present study was conducted to determine the relative merits of these two medications.
