Experimentally-induced hypertension in wistar rats: the role of achatina fulica derived chitosan

The scourge of hypertension has led to the continued search for alternative drug therapy that will be effective, affordable and devoid of side effects. Chitosan has been demonstrated to have the ability to scavenge free radicals generated as products of oxidative stress in various diseases.
This study investigates the effects of Achatina fulica derived Chitosan on the morphology of the kidney, cardiac muscles, liver and spleen in experimentally-induced hypertension in Wistar rats.

Microbiological assessment in plaque samples of patients with oral cancer with or without smoking

Aim: To isolate micro-organisms from the GCF, Serum and saliva in patients with oral malignancy with or without Chronic periodontitis. To detect virus from the serum, saliva and GCF in patients with Chronic periodontitis with and without smoking. To evaluate ROM levels from the GCF, saliva and Serum with oral malignancy with and without smoking and Chronic periodontitis.

Role of gabapentin in chelation associated status dystonicus in wilson’s disease

Status dystonicus is a life threatening neurological emergency which occurs secondary to etiologies like cerebral palsy, neurodegenerative disorders etc. Status dystonicus after initiation of chelation therapy with penicillamine in cases of Wilson’s Disease is not unknown and is generally refractory to usual antidystonic medications. We report a case of 10 year old male with Wilson’s Disease who developed status dystonicus after initiation of Penicillamine and was subsequently managed with Gabapentin as antidystonic medication for acute status dystonicus as well as long term therapy.

Cryotherapy with silicone products - a noninvasive treatment for keloids - a prospective efficacy assessment study

Keloidal scarring is one of the most frustrating clinical problems in wound healing. Hypertrophic scars and keloid may follow local skin trauma or inflammatory skin disorders like laceration, tattoos, burns, injections, ear-piercing, vaccination, bites, acne, abscess or surgery. Medical advice is sought for relief of pruritus, pain, restricted movement and mainly for cosmetic disfigurement.

Comparative study of placental volume in iugr complicating and normal pregnancy and its correlation with fetal outcome

Background: IUGR is a condition where the foetus fails to achieve its genetic growth potential. In our study we aim to compare placental volume in IUGR and normal pregnancy and its correlation with fetal outcome.

Methods: A group of 50 women with IUGR complicating pregnancy and 50 women with normal pregnancy were selected and the placental volumes measured before and after delivery and the results were correlated with perinatal outcome

Study of fetal outcome in relation to hba1c values in 3rd trimester diabetic women

Background: The usefulness of single value of HbAlc during last trimester in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes in predicting perinatal outcome. The aim of the study was to anticipate and manage the difficult labor due to macrosomia and to monitor these high risk newborns closely for hypoglycemia thereby preventing the neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Stability indicating normal phase hptlc method for estimation of sofosbuvir in bulk drug and pharmaceutical dosage form

This paper presents the development and validation of normal phase High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography methods for analysis of Sofosbuvir in Bulk and tablet Dosage form. Chromatography was performed on silica gel 60F254 plate as stationary phase and the mobile phase comprised of Toluene: Methanol (7:3, v/v). Sofosbuvir showed Rf value of 0.60±0.03 was scanned at 265 nm using Camag TLC Scanner 3. Method was validated according to ICH guidelines. Determination of correlation coefficient was found to be 0.9948 in the concentration ranges 200-1200 ng/band.

Synthesis and evaluation of fibrates for anti-diabetic and lipid lowering activity

Low circulating levels HDLC and high circulating levels of TG levels constitutes a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease: These are also frequently observed among patients with type II Diabetes mellitus (DM). The principal hypolipidimic agents currently in use majorly are fibrates, a PPAR α agonist. Among oral hypoglycemic agents thiazolidinedione, PPAR γ agonist, effective in reducing elevated blood sugar levels. In the present study we are reporting a systematic synthesis of fibrate analogues PPAR α agonists and a PPAR α-γ dual agonist.

Correlation between central corneal thickness and visual field defects, cup to disc ratio and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in primary open angle glaucoma patients

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) and Visual Field (VF) defect parameters like Mean Deviation (MD) and Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD), Cup-to-Disc Ratio (CDR) and Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer Thickness (RNFL-T) in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) patients.
Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO), Rawalpindi from September 2015 to September 2016. Sixty eyes of 30 patients with diagnosed POAG were analysed. Correlation of CCT with other variables was studied.
