Pneumococcal bacteria attacks different parts of the body, when it attacks lungs, it results in pneumonia; it causes bacteremia in blood and meningitis in brain. Under-five children prone to get pneumococcal infections from the community. Pneumococcal vaccination provides protection to children against most of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia and also other Pneumococcal diseases. A descriptive study, therefore, was undertaken to assess the knowledge of pneumococcal vaccine among mothers of under -five children, Chennai.

Brain death

Brain death is the complete loss of brain function (including involuntary activity necessary to sustain life).It differs from persistent vegetative state, in which the person is alive and some autonomic functions remain.
Brain death denotes irreversible conditions, i.e., perfect loss of brain and its stem functions while signs of life still exist in patients. Studies indicated that 1%–4% of deaths occur in hospitals, and 10% of mortalities in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are reported because of brain death.

Drug utilization pattern of antihypertensive drugs at tertiary care teaching hospital

Background: Drug utilization studies conducted at regular intervals help to guide the physician in prescribing drugs rationally. Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted in the outpatient of department of general medicine of NC Medical college & Hospital a tertiary care teaching hospital. Data was collected from patients who have been diagnosed with hypertension as per JNC-8 guidelines and patients receiving or prescribed with antihypertensive medications were included. Frequency and proportions of utilization of antihypertensive medications in were figured.

Comparative study of safety and efficacy of gabapentin, pregabalin and amitriptyline in management of neuropathic pain

Background: Current treatment for neuropathic pain (NeP) are tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), gabapentin and pregabalin as first-line treatment for the most common NeP conditions. Current therapy for the treatment of neuropathic pain is often unsatisfactory. Considerable variation in treatment pattern still exists in spite of availability of sufficient literature from various guidelines. Recent Indian market data suggested that the utilization (sale) of drugs such as amitriptyline, pregabalin, and gabapentin is actually recommended in the guidelines.

Acute appendicitis in pregnancy: 33 cases

Acute appendicitis is the most common nonobstetric surgical emergency during pregnancy. Its occurrence during pregnancy exposes it to additional diagnostic difficulties and transforms the current pregnancy into a pregnancy at risk. Our series includes 33 cases of acute appendicitis and pregnancy. The objective of the study is to describe the characteristics of acute appendicitis in pregnant women. In terms of epidemiology most studies find a predominance of primary patients with acute appendicitis, in our study it was more the multipares.

Case control study of mato-fetal outcome in cases of nuchal cord

Introduction: Nuchal cord is associated with higher perinatal morbidity and mortality due to variable fetal heart rate during labour.
Objectives: To study the mode of delivery and perinatal outcome in cases of nuchal cord.
Methods: This is a prospective study of 308 cases. Out of them 154 cases were diagnosed as a nuchal cord in ultrasonography, mode of delivery, and perinatal outcome was observed.
Results: In case group, vaginal delivery, caesarean section and forceps delivery were 56.49%, 42.86%, 0.65% respectively.

Hypochondriasis and its association with internet use among medical students

Introduction: Medical education and career is the most physically and mentally demanding career, with obvious stressors such as long clinical hours, extensive study and arduous assessments. Amongst these, hypochondrial concerns are a major overlooked factor. Addressed as "Medical students’ disease" (MSD), nosophobia and others, it has been proved, and disproved as a stressor by various researches. Moreover, with the availability of extensive information on the Internet, validating such concerns is more easier now than ever, also giving birth to the concept of ‘Cyberchondria’.
