Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker antihypertensive drug. The main goal of our study was to formulate and evaluate Amlodipine transdermal patches & compare the polymers-ethyl cellulose and chitosan which are used in the preparation of Amlodipine patches. Amlodipine were prepared by solvent casting method by using polymers like ethylcellulose and chitosan in different proportions (1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%). Propylene glycol and dibutyl phthalate were used as plasticizers. The evaluation of transdermal patches was folding endurance, thickness, percentage moisture loss, percentage moisture absorption, drug content and water vapor transmission rate. Franz diffusion cellis used to perform the diffusion studies. Formulation E7(2% Ethyl Cellulose) and C7(2% Chitosan) with DBP as plasticizer showed a maximum release of 99% in 24 hours. The use of chitosan in transdermal patch of Amlodepine found to be attractive by comparing these two parameters based on its biocompatibility and biodegradability as well as opportunities to modify the charge density and molecular chain length in the membrane without changing its status as a natural biopolymer. So, from the above experiment, the knowledge on the use of chitosan to control drug release in transdermal delivery systems might be applicable to other transdermal drug delivery system as well.
